Izanagi and Izanami

Izanagi and Izanami
The first human couple encountered in Japanese myth. Looking down from the floating bridge of heaven they stirred up the brine with a jewelled spear and the island of Onogoro arose from the expanse of waters. On it they settled and their children were Amaterasu, the sun goddess; Tsukiyomi, the moon god; Susano, the sea god; and Kagu-Tsuchi, the fire god. After the birth of the latter child Izanami died, and her husband pursued her to Hades, where he found only her suppurating body, from which he fled in horror. This story is taken from the Kojiki, the Japanese Creation Legend.
